Pamekasan administration has ordered 10,000 face masks from East Java Health Agency to protect residents from harmful volcanic ash that has been erupting from Bromo since Wednesday.

Pamekasan Health Agency chief Ismail Bey said the local supply of masks had run out and some districts, including Pakong, Pegantenan, Proppo and Palengaan, had not received any yet.

“Hopefully the additional masks will be approved so tomorrow we can begin distributing them,” Ismail said Monday, as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.

Since Wednesday, the agency had distributed 1,200 masks to residents in two districts, Larangan and Kadur.

“We need to prevent respiratory infections caused by inhaling the ash,” Ismail said.
