Mexico investigating deadly oil pipeline explosion

The Jakarta Post | Tue, 12/21/2010 8:50 AM | World

Mexican officials say investigators have begun probing a massive oil pipeline explosion that killed 28 people.

Valentin Meneses is interior secretary for the state of Puebla, where the blast took place in the town of San Martin Texmelucan.

Meneses says a commission has been formed in tandem with state oil company Petroleos Mexicanos to investigate.

He said Monday that 32 homes were completely destroyed and 83 partially damaged by the blast.

Authorities say thieves attempting to siphon crude caused a leak in the pipeline, and the spilled oil was later ignited by a spark from an unknown source.
