More than 1,447 people have left their homes since Monday to avoid a flood that has swept through West Malaka in Belu regency, East Nusa Tenggara, a local official said Wednesday.

The figure is expected to increase as evacuees from three flood-affected villages of Mota`Ain, Sikun and Fofoe had not yet been counted, Jhon Blegur, a local public health service post official said.

It was unclear where residents of the three villages were taking refuge, as land communication to the villages had been cut off, Antara news agency reported.

“The only way to reach the villages now is by boat,” he said.
Belu deputy regent Lodovikus Taolin said the floods had affected dozens of villages in West Malaka including Alas Selatan, Rainawe, Fahiluka, Lawalu, Railor, Naimana, Kleseleon, Motaulun, Umatoos, Lasaen, Fafoe, Sikun, Oanmane, Forekmodok, Angkaes, Wederok and Umalawain.

Jhon said the flood was the biggest to hit the area in the past five years.
