Hundreds of police officers clashed with students of Al-Asyriah Mandar University (Unasman) in Polewali regency, West Sulawesi, on Thursday.
At least 11 students were reportedly injured during the incident.
The clash began following the announcement of Polewali Mandar District Court’s plan to vacate the Unasman campus amid an ownership dispute between Darul Dakwah Wal Irsyad (DDI) group and Unasman.
The court favored DDI in its ruling, but Unasman opposed the decision.
Syariat Tajuddin, the director to the Unasman Research and Community Service Institute (LPPM), said the clash occurred after several police officers came to see the university’s board of directors.
“They failed to reach a consensus in the meeting,” Syariat said.
All of a sudden, a fight broke out outside the campus between police officers and students.
Police reportedly opened fire.
“I heard some students were shot, but I haven't received detailed information whether the wounds were from rubber bullets or live rounds,” Syariat said as quoted by tempointeraktif.com.
Injured students were treated at Polewali Mandar Hospital.
Muhammad Amri, a resident of Polewali, said the clash continued as students blockaded the campus.
“The clash is still going on,” Amri said.
No office report was immediately available concerning the incident.
