United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) on Thursday denied that Imanda Amalia, a female Indonesian reportedly killed in the recent unrest in Egypt, was a member of its staff.
“No. She was not a staff member of the UNRWA,” UNRWA spokesman Christopher Gunness said via correspondence with Antara on Thursday.
Earlier rumors had spread via the Internet, and were later picked up by the media, that Imanda was killed in riots in Egypt. It was reported that Imanda worked as a staffer at the UNRWA.
The spokesman of the UNRWA office in Jerusalem, Sami Mshasha, also said no records showed Imanda was and employee of the agency.
“Based on our research, Imanda was never recorded as member of staff at the UNRWA,” he said.
The news of Imanda’s death was first published on the Facebook page of Science of the Universe, which later quickly removed the report and apologized for the error.
