Murdered student may have had tragic past

Hans David Tampubolon, The Jakarta Post, Jakarta | Mon, 11/07/2011 9:25 AM

Police in South Jakarta are still investigating the death of a 17-year-old high school student who was allegedly killed at a night club in Kemang, South Jakarta, on early Saturday.

South Jakarta Police chief Sr. Comr. Imam Sugianto said that police were now trying to identify who attacked Raafi Aga Winasya Benjamin, a Pangudi Luhur high school student at the upscale Shy Rooftop nightclub.

Imam said that witnesses told the police that Raafi and his assailant argued before the stabbing.

Among witnesses questioned by the police were some of Raafi’s friends, a driver who took him to Siaga Pasar Minggu Hospital in South Jakarta, employees and a number of club patrons.

Imam said that police would investigate nightclub management, whom he alleged had tampered with case evidence.

He said that before police arrived at the crime scene, nightclub workers had cleaned up the floors and carpets where the stabbing apparently took place.

Imam said that police would find more clues from closed circuit television (CCTV) camera footage inside the club.

Raafi died on his way to the hospital after suffering from a stab wound to his stomach on early Saturday. He was buried on Sunday at the Jeruk Purut Cemetery in South Jakarta.

The assailant fled the scene after stabbing Raafi.

As police were busy working to identify Raafi’s assailant, more people learned about his tragic past from online conversations on Sunday.

Senior journalist Linda Djalil wrote on her blog in kompasiana.com said that Raafi’s father, Harnoko “Oky” Dewantoro, was a convicted murderer who killed three people in Los Angeles in November 1992.

Linda, who covered the investigation of the case, said that Oky killed his younger brother, Eri Tiharto Dharmawan, Gina Sutan Azwar and Suresh Michandini, an American of Indian descent who owned a laundry company named Mr. Dry Clean in Los Angeles.

Raafi’s mother, Anggi, divorced Oky after he was indicted and raised her son on her own.

Student opens fire at Omaha high school, 2 wounded

Josh Funk, Associated Press, Omaha, Nebraska | Thu, 01/06/2011 8:37 AM | World

The son of a police detective opened fire at a Nebraska high school Wednesday, wounding the principal and assistant principal and forcing panicked students to take cover in the kitchen of the building just as they returned from a holiday break, authorities said.

The gunman, who had attended the school for no more than two months, fled from the scene and fatally shot himself in his car about a mile (kilometer) away.

Authorities did not know why the suspect, identified as 17-year-old Robert Butler Jr., targeted the administrators, who were hospitalized.

In a rambling Facebook post filled with expletives, Butler warned Wednesday that people would hear about the "evil" things he did and said the school drove him to violence.

Police Chief Alex Hayes provided no details on the weapon Butler used or how he obtained it. Butler's father is a detective for the Omaha Police Department.

Authorities first received reports of the shooting around 12:50 p.m. local time. The school was immediately locked down, but within two hours, students were being released in groups. Parents picked them up at a nearby church.

Hours after the shooting, Principal Curtis Case was listed in stable condition. Vice Principal Vicki Kaspar was in critical condition.
